Letting Go & Embracing Uncertainty.

Updated: Dec 21, 2021

Be the water that flows down the river, don't get stuck in the mud or you'll miss out on what's coming downstream.

If you're a human, you probably experience times of anxiety and depression. I can relate. A lot of us get caught up in negative spirals when we think about the things we want, the things we used to have, and the things we can't have. This can cause a lot of stress and inner turmoil.

When we feel anxious, sad, upset, etc. it's usually because we're fighting with reality. We want something to be different that is beyond our control, but rather than accept things as they are; we fixate on them. We reinforce negative thoughts and collect evidence to prove our point - which doesn't lend well to our happiness and overall life satisfaction.

But who wants to stew on things beyond our control? Instead, let's try to accept things as they are and welcome the uncertainty.

A lot of us fear ending up alone or picking a career path or figuring out what to do with our lives, etc. Many of us can also get trapped in the past and resent change; wanting things to go back to how they used to be. These are all normal things to get stuck in a rut about. But how can we pull ourselves out?

A metaphor I like to use is our relationship with the universe. While our knowledge of space is significant, what we don't know is much more vast. We can't wrap our heads around how big the universe truly is or what all is out there. However, even though we don't know everything, we still are able to admire the beauty of the night sky, place wishes on shooting stars, and embrace the unknowns of the Universe that engulfs us.

Try applying this same logic to life. We don't know what the next week, month, or year will hold. You could bump into someone at a grocery store tomorrow and they'd offer you a dream job; in a month you could find a lost dog and return it to its owner who ends up being your soulmate; you could get a winning lottery ticket from your Aunt Marge on your birthday and become a millionaire that travels the world while volunteering. There are so many things we can't account for and so many possibilities just waiting to be stumbled upon. We just need to let go of the anxiety that comes with trying to control the uncontrollable and be open to the uncertainty of what life has to offer.

Some helpful tips to get out of negative thinking patterns: practice gratitude and patience, all the while trying new things.

Look around and realize how many lemons life is giving you. Be grateful for the things and people in your life that bring you joy, the people that love you, the resources you have access to, the beauty of nature, etc. Work towards your goals, but have patience and faith that things will make their way to you as they're meant to. In that time, try new things to build confidence, push your comfort zone, and get more out of life.

The unknown can be beautiful like the Milky Way if we embrace the uncertainty and live as much as possible in this fickle life.
